Research, quest and the formal register.
The noun la recherche covers both research and the search for something: « à la recherche du temps perdu ». Proust’s title is the phrase every French speaker knows, and être à la recherche de is standard formal usage.
Formal writing prefers rechercher for deliberate, methodical searching — « la police recherche un suspect » — where chercher alone would sound too casual for the context.
💡 Focus at this level: Literary & formal
1. « Rechercher » for official searching. Police, research, recruitment.
2. « À la recherche de » is the formal frame.
3. Recognise « il chercha ». Past historic, written narrative.
