Laisser in formal French
Formal and legal French uses laisser for bequeathing: « il a laissé sa fortune à sa fille ». The noun le legs and the verb léguer belong to the same register.
The construction laisser place à — to give way to — is standard in written analysis: « l’optimisme a laissé place au doute ». It is a clean, formal way to mark a change.
