Demonstrating, in formal register.
Formal and academic French prefers démontrer when there is proof: « cette étude démontre que… ». Montrer shows; démontrer proves. Choosing the stronger verb without evidence is a common register error.
The formula faire montre de — to display a quality — is fixed and formal: « il a fait montre d’un grand courage ». Note the noun montre here has nothing to do with a watch.
💡 Focus at this level: Literary & formal
1. « Démontrer » only with real proof.
2. « Faire montre de » + quality. Formal, fixed.
3. Recognise « il montra ». Past historic.
