Philosophy gave this verb its most famous line.
French keeps the most quoted sentence in its philosophy: « Je pense, donc je suis » — Descartes. It is recognised universally and is still used, half seriously, in argument.
Formal writing prefers estimer or considérer where speech would use penser: « nous estimons que » in a report, « je pense que » in a café. And la pensée, the noun, carries the whole intellectual register.

1. Swap in « estimer » for formal writing. It signals judgement, not feeling.
2. Recognise « il pensa ». Past historic, narrative only.
3. Know the Descartes line. It is cultural literacy, not grammar.
