Decline, collapse and downfall.
Formal and historical French uses tomber for the fall of regimes and cities: « l’Empire est tombé ». The noun la chute — the fall — carries the same weight: « la chute de l’Empire romain ».
Formal registers also prefer chuter for figures — « les prix ont chuté » — and succomber for succumbing. Tomber au champ d’honneur is the fixed phrase for dying in battle.
