Why games work (and how to use them properly)

Learning games earn their place in language learning for one mechanical reason: they convert repetition — the thing memory demands and willpower resists — into something you volunteer for. Every interactive game on this page is built from a real lesson or chart on this site, which is what separates french learning games from generic quiz apps: win a round here and the vocabulary belongs to a lesson you can open, replay and practise in context. The seven game types train different muscles — quizzes for recall, memory match for vocabulary pairs, listening games for the ear, conjugation races for verb speed under pressure, sentence builders for word order, scramble for spelling, gender duel for the le/la reflex — and the filters above sort every free game by type and CEFR level, A1 to B2.

The method that makes play into progress: pick games one notch above comfortable, replay each until you win it twice in a row (the second win is where the learning lives), and follow the link on every game’s page back to its source lesson when a question stumps you — game, lesson, game again is the loop this whole arcade was built around. Ten minutes of games as a daily warm-up before study — or as the study, on tired days — keeps French fun and keeps you showing up, which is the entire secret of vocabulary practice: the best exercise is the one you’ll actually repeat tomorrow. Start with the classics above, or filter to your level and let the arcade deal.
