- Dates use cardinal numbers: « le trois mai » — except the 1st: « le premier mai ».
Months and seasons in French — FAQ
What are the 12 months in French?
Janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre — all masculine, all lowercase. Hear each one with the audio buttons above.
Why is it « au printemps » but « en été »?
Because printemps starts with a consonant and the others with vowels: French uses au + consonant-starting season and en + vowel-starting season. It’s pure sound-smoothing — memorise « au printemps » as a chunk.
How do I say the date in French?
« Nous sommes le + number + month » : nous sommes le trois mai. Only the first of the month uses the ordinal: le premier mai. Days and full dates live on the calendar chart.
