arriver at A2 — the past tenses (être verb!)

« arriver » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

Another être verb, with agreement.

Arriver takes être

Because this verb takes être and not avoir, the participle agrees with the subject: « je suis arrivé », « elle est arrivée », « nous sommes arrivés ». Learners who default to avoir produce the single most audible beginner error in French.

So « je suis arrivé » — or « je suis arrivée » if you are a woman. This is one of the verbs of movement that make up the classic être group, alongside aller, venir, partir and entrer.

💡 Focus at this level: Past — with être, not avoir
