The participle is senti — no , no -u, just -i, which is the pattern for this whole verb family: parti, dormi, servi, menti.

The imperfect is built from the nous stem, so the t is back: je sentais. It is very common for describing atmospheres and physical states: « je sentais qu’il y avait un problème ».
