Turn it reflexive and it becomes “to wonder”.
Se demander means to wonder — to ask oneself: « je me demande s’il viendra ». It is extremely common and has no single-word English equivalent, which is exactly why learners under-use it.
Note it takes si, not que, for indirect questions: « je me demande si… », « je me demande pourquoi… ». And in the passé composé the reflexive forces être: « je me suis demandé ».
💡 Focus at this level: se demander & the subjunctive
1. Se demander = to wonder. Use it instead of a clumsy paraphrase.
2. Follow with « si » or a question word, never « que ».
3. Reflexive takes être in the past. « Je me suis demandé pourquoi. »
