📘 Cinema, the French religion
- France invented it — les frères Lumière, 1895 — and treats it accordingly: Cannes, les César, and more cinema screens per person than almost anywhere.
- VO vs VF: version originale (with subtitles) vs version française (dubbed). Learners: always VO — check the séance listing for « VOSTFR ».
- A bad film is un navet (a turnip); a great one, un chef-d’œuvre. « C’était un navet ! » wins you instant credibility.
- La fête du cinéma (late June): a few days when every ticket in France costs ~5 €.
- Asking along: « Ça te dit d’aller au ciné ? » — le ciné is what everyone actually says.
