📘 The rules behind French numbers
- 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71 use et: vingt et un, soixante et onze — the others use a hyphen: vingt-deux, trente-cinq.
- 70–99 is arithmetic: 70 = soixante-dix (60+10), 80 = quatre-vingts (4×20), 90 = quatre-vingt-dix (4×20+10), 95 = quatre-vingt-quinze.
- quatre-vingts keeps its -s only when nothing follows: quatre-vingts ✓ but quatre-vingt-trois.
- Pronunciation: six and dix = [sis]/[dis] alone, [si]/[di] before a consonant (six livres), [siz]/[diz] before a vowel (six ans).
- Ordinals: premier / première (1st), then add -ième: deuxième, troisième, dixième.
- Big numbers: cent (100), mille (1 000 — never takes -s), un million, un milliard (billion!).
