A finished act, or a lasting impression.
J’ai laissé is the everyday past for forgetting or depositing something: « j’ai laissé un mot » — I left a note. It is one of those verbs you will need on the day you lose something.
Note the useful figurative sense: laisser une impression, laisser un souvenir. « Ça m’a laissé un mauvais souvenir » — that left me with a bad memory. Same verb, no object physically left anywhere.
