This verb takes être, and the participle agrees.
Because this verb takes être and not avoir, the participle agrees with the subject: « je suis resté », « elle est restée », « nous sommes restés ». Learners who default to avoir produce the single most audible beginner error in French.
So it is « je suis resté à Paris », never « j’ai resté ». If you are a woman writing it, you add the e: « je suis restée ». The agreement is silent in speech for this verb but visible and marked in writing.
💡 Focus at this level: Past — with être, not avoir
1. Être, never avoir. « Je suis resté », « elle est restée ».
2. Agreement follows the subject. +e feminine, +s plural.
3. Imperfect for duration. « Je restais souvent chez eux. »
