trouver at B2 — the subjunctive
On this page
Say you don’t think so, and the next verb changes shape.
Why « je ne trouve pas que » takes the subjunctive
This is the real B2 lesson for this verb. Je trouve que + indicative states an opinion you hold: « je trouve que c’est juste ». Negate it and French switches to the subjunctive: « je ne trouve pas que ce soit juste ».
The logic is consistent: doubt and denial take the subjunctive, assertion does not. The same flip happens with penser and croire, so learning it here buys you three verbs at once.

👨🏫 How to use « trouver » at this level
1. Positive stays normal. « Je trouve que c’est bien » — no subjunctive, ever.
2. Negative and question flip it. « Je ne trouve pas que ce soit bien. »
3. Drill with être. c’est → ce soit is the swap you will need ninety percent of the time.
