recevoir at C1 — refined & idiomatic
On this page
Exams, welcomes and public thrashings.
The idioms
With exams the candidate is never the active subject: « elle a été reçue première au concours » — she passed, and brilliantly. Say « elle a reçu son concours » and a French ear hears a parcel arriving. The examiners, though, do act: « le jury a reçu douze candidats sur quarante ». Passive for the candidate, active for the jury.
The verb also carries welcome, and « recevoir quelqu’un comme un chien dans un jeu de quilles » is the icy one: the dog wrecks the skittles, nobody is pleased to see you. Bad news brings two more. « Recevoir une douche froide » is the sudden cold shower; « recevoir une volée de bois vert » is heavier, the press word for a public thrashing.
