servir at C1 — refined & idiomatic
On this page
Flattery, guinea pigs and things kept just in case.
The idioms
« Servir la soupe à quelqu’un » is what French journalists accuse each other of: asking gentle questions and letting the guest shine. « Le présentateur lui a servi la soupe » means nobody was challenged. The tone is mildly contemptuous, and you hear it about media, politics and flattering colleagues. Never use it as a compliment, because it always implies complacency.
« Servir de » plus a noun is the everyday workhorse. « Servir de cobaye » is to be the test subject, usually reluctantly, and « servir de tremplin » is to act as a springboard for a career. Then comes « ça peut toujours servir », the phrase French people produce while refusing to throw anything away: a cable, a jam jar, an old contact.
