Exprimer le Temps
quand, pendant que, avant que… — the time connectors
1. Simultanéité (two things at once)
| Connecteur | Exemple | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| quand / lorsque | Quand j’arrive, je t’appelle. | indicatif |
| pendant que | Il lit pendant que je cuisine. | indicatif |
| au moment où | Il est parti au moment où j’arrivais. | indicatif |
| tandis que | Elle dort tandis qu’il travaille. | indicatif (also = whereas) |
2. Antériorité & postériorité
| Connecteur | Sens | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| avant que | before | + SUBJONCTIF ! |
| après que | after | + indicatif |
| dès que / aussitôt que | as soon as | + futur for future! |
| depuis que | since | indicatif |
| jusqu’à ce que | until | + SUBJONCTIF ! |
3. Le piège du futur (English uses present, French uses future)
| Anglais (present) | Français (futur !) |
|---|---|
| When I arrive, I’ll call. | Quand j’arriverai, j’appellerai. |
| As soon as he can… | Dès qu’il pourra… |
💡 Les deux pièges à retenir
avant que and jusqu’à ce que take the subjonctif: « avant que tu partes », « jusqu’à ce qu’il revienne ».
After quand / dès que / aussitôt que, if the action is in the future, French uses the futur (where English keeps the present): « quand tu seras prêt ».
après que is technically + indicatif (« après qu’il est parti ») — though natives often slip into the subjunctive by analogy with avant que.
