La Restriction : ne… que
« ne… que » = ONLY (not a negation!)
1. Le principe (ne… que means « only », NOT « not »)
| Phrase | Sens | Attention |
|---|---|---|
| Je n’ai que dix euros. | I have ONLY ten euros. | ≠ « je n’ai pas » |
| Il ne boit que de l’eau. | He drinks ONLY water. | = seulement |
| Elle ne pense qu’à toi. | She thinks ONLY about you. |
2. « que » se place devant l’élément limité (que goes right before what you restrict)
| Exemple | On limite… |
|---|---|
| Je ne mange que des légumes. | → des légumes (only vegetables) |
| Je ne travaille que le lundi. | → le lundi (only on Mondays) |
| Il n’est arrivé qu’hier. | → hier (only yesterday) |
3. ne… que vs seulement (same meaning, two structures)
| ne… que | seulement (adverbe) |
|---|---|
| Je ne bois que du thé. | Je bois seulement du thé. |
| (both = I only drink tea) |
💡 Les points clés
ne… que = only, NOT a negative — there’s no « pas »! « Je n’ai que ça » = I have only that.
The « que » sits right before the thing you’re limiting: « je ne lis que le soir » (only in the evening).
Easy swap: replace « ne… que » with the adverb « seulement » — same meaning, no « ne ».
