1. La formation (= present subjunctive of aux + past participle)

Same triggers as the present subjunctive (émotion, doute, bien que, avant que…) — you just move the ACTION into the past.
The choice is about TIMING: « je suis content que tu viennes » (you’ll come) vs « je suis content que tu sois venu » (you came).
Agreement with être still applies: « qu’elles soient parties » (feminine plural + es).
Master the present subjunctive first — the past is just that + a participle.
