dormir in real spoken French
On this page
Kipping, dozing off again, dropped negatives.
How France really sleeps
At speed, « je dors » is « j’dors », and the ne disappears: « j’ai pas dormi de la nuit », « il dort pas beaucoup ». Questions lose their inversion too — at breakfast you hear « t’as bien dormi ? », never « as-tu bien dormi ? ». Learn the dropped ne and « t’as » first: they reshape more sentences than any slang word will.
« Pioncer » is the everyday street synonym of dormir: normal among friends, impossible in a report. « Se rendormir » is the one prefixed form you truly need — « j’me suis rendormi », I dropped straight back off — and spoken French adds « direct » for immediately. Parents keep the nursery « faire dodo », affectionate or teasing. None belongs in writing you sign.
💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — pioncer, se rendormir direct
