Giving things back

rendre is a regular -RE verb, a different family from all the -ER verbs you have met. The endings are -s, -s, —, -ons, -ez, -ent: je rends, tu rends, il rend, nous rendons, vous rendez, ils rendent. Note that the third person singular has no ending at all — just the stem.

1. Il rend — no ending. The most distinctive feature of -RE verbs.

2. Learn the family together. vendre, attendre, entendre, perdre.

3. Rendre = give back. « Je rends le livre. »

Je rends le livre à la bibliothèque.I return the book to the library.

Il rend la monnaie.He gives the change back.

Tu me rends mon stylo ?Will you give me back my pen?

Nous rendons les clés demain.We give back the keys tomorrow.
