Giving is an event, so the passé composé does most of the work.
Because giving happens at a moment, j’ai donné is the natural past: « je lui ai donné mon numéro ». Note the pronoun lui — it replaces à + person, and it sits before the auxiliary, not after the participle.
The imperfect je donnais shows up for habits: « je donnais des cours le samedi » — I used to teach on Saturdays. Same verb, completely different feel.
💡 Focus at this level: Past — what you gave
1. « lui » already contains the « à ». Never say « je lui ai donné à Marie ».
2. Pronouns go before the auxiliary. « Je lui ai donné », not after.
3. Habit = imperfect. « Je donnais des cours » describes a routine.
