sortir at B1 — future & conditional

« sortir » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

Project forward and hypothesise with « sortir ».

Future & conditional

At B1 you stop being trapped in the present: the futur says what will happen (« demain, je …rai ») and the conditionnel says what would happen (« si je pouvais, je …rais »). Here’s the teacher’s secret that makes this level easy: they share the same stem. Learn one stem for « sortir », and you’ve bought two tenses for the price of one.

The conditional is also the sound of French politeness — « je voudrais », « pourriez-vous » — so mastering it doesn’t just add grammar, it changes how polite you sound in a bakery.

👨‍🏫 How the future & conditional work — step by step

1

Find the future stem: sortir- — futur stems always end in -r. That r-sound is how your ear recognises the future.

2

Add the endings — they are exactly the verb avoir:

-ai-as-a-ons-ez-ont= j’ai, tu as, il a…
3

Conditionnel = same stem sortir- + the imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait…): « je sortirais » = I would…

⚠️ Classic mistake: « je sortirai » (futur, I will) vs « je sortirais » (conditionnel, I would) — one letter changes the meaning. In speech, listen for [e] vs [ɛ].

🧠 Memory hook: si-clause template to memorise: « Si + présent → futur » and « Si + imparfait → conditionnel ». Build one of each with « sortir » right now.
