sortir at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Findings, official silences, outgoing mayors.
Reports and remits
Written analysis lives on the impersonal « il ressort de … que » : « il ressort de l’enquête que la procédure n’a pas été respectée ». It presents a conclusion as something the evidence produced by itself, which is why reports, judgments and editorials prefer it to a bare « on voit que ». The subject is the finding, never the analyst.
Administration rules a question out politely with « sortir du cadre de » or « sortir de ses attributions » : nobody is refused, the file simply falls elsewhere. Journalism keeps « sortir de sa réserve » for the official who finally speaks after weeks of silence, and « le sortant » for the incumbent standing again — or, as often now, declining to.
💡 Focus at this level: Formal — il ressort de, sortir de sa réserve, le sortant
