répondre at C1 — refined & idiomatic
On this page
Showing up, firing back, missing the point.
The idioms
« Répondre présent » has nothing to do with answering: it means you were there when it mattered, the shift was covered. It is warm praise, and the attribute agrees — « elle a répondu présente ». « Répondre du tac au tac » praises something else: wit, the answer coming straight back, sharp and unrehearsed. Do not confuse it with « répondre au quart de tour », which only means instantly and usually carries reproach.
The blunt one is « répondre à côté de la plaque »: the answer misses the target, not because it is false but because it answers another question. Teachers and interviewers say it constantly. And « la réponse du berger à la bergère » names a reply that pays back an earlier attack, measure for measure — old, literary, and still used in the press.

« plaque ». The answer lands off the target — beside the point, not exactly wrong.
Your student came to every rehearsal. Which fits: « elle a toujours répondu présente » ou « elle a toujours bien répondu » ?
Show answer
« Elle a toujours répondu présente ». That is the fixed phrase for being reliably there, and the attribute agrees with her; the second only means she answered well.
