répondre at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Minutes, letters and the impersonal passive.
The written register
In minutes and in the press, nobody says yes or no: « le ministre a répondu par la négative », or « par l’affirmative ». The formula is fixed, slightly cold, and reports a position rather than a word. Administration goes further and removes the person entirely: « il sera répondu à votre réclamation sous quinze jours ». Someone will answer; the sentence refuses to say who.
Silence has its own written phrase: « nos courriers sont restés sans réponse » — cold, and always a reproach dressed as a fact. Careful with « un répondant »: a lease asks for « un garant » or « une caution », not for that word. It is the person who answers for you, « servir de répondant », while speech keeps « avoir du répondant »: having a ready comeback, or money behind you.
💡 Focus at this level: Formal — répondre par la négative, il sera répondu, rester sans réponse
👨🏫 How to use « répondre » at this level
1. « Répondre par la négative » = to answer no. Press and minutes, never speech.
2. « Il sera répondu à » = your request will be answered. Impersonal passive, pure admin.
3. « Rester sans réponse » = to go unanswered. Cold, quietly reproachful.

« Il a répondu par la négative ». It is the reporting formula of the press and of official minutes.

« Il vous sera répondu dans les meilleurs délais. » The impersonal passive removes the person and softens the promise.
