Belonging and going against
Beyond signing up for a class, « s’inscrire » is the French verb for belonging to a line of thought. « S’inscrire dans la lignée de » places someone in a tradition: « son travail s’inscrit dans la lignée de Perec ». It is a compliment in criticism, and a polite way of saying nothing new here when the tone turns dry. Its opposite is « s’inscrire à contre-courant ».
« S’inscrire dans le paysage » is what a building, a habit or a festival does once nobody notices it any more — it has become part of the scenery. In ordinary conversation the same verb simply says that something fits: « son refus s’inscrit tout à fait dans sa manière de travailler », entirely in keeping with how he works. The prepositions are fixed, so learn each phrase whole.
