cueillir at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Prefixed cousins: gathering, welcoming, silent remembrance.
The prefixed family
Formal French leans on the prefixed cousins. « Recueillir » is to gather what is offered: « le juge a recueilli les témoignages », « l’association a recueilli des fonds », « ils ont recueilli un enfant ». Its noun « un recueil » is an anthology — « un recueil de poèmes ». Nothing here is figurative; it is simply the register of records and reports.
The pronominal « se recueillir » means to gather oneself in silence, at a grave or a memorial: « la foule s’est recueillie devant la mairie ». Keep the pronoun in every form. Meanwhile « accueillir » has a legal life beyond welcoming guests: « la cour a accueilli le recours » — the court upheld the appeal. In that sense it is pure courtroom French.
