parler at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Languages spoken, talks reopened, voices officially borrowed.
The written register
In careful written French, parler often turns pronominal so that no agent has to be named: « le breton se parle encore dans le Finistère », « le wolof se parle à Dakar comme à Paris ». It is the neutral way of stating who speaks what, and the press uses it constantly for languages and dialects.
« Les pourparlers », always plural, is the press word for negotiations before an agreement: « les pourparlers sont au point mort ». « Parler au nom de » assigns authority — a spokesperson, a lawyer, a minister — and never fits a private opinion. Add « sans parler de », the essayist’s hinge that stacks one damning detail on the next.
