1. A1 — The tiny words that place everything: at, of/from, in.

Structure	Exemple	Traduction
à = ville + en = pays (f)	J’habite à Paris.	I live in Paris.
	Je viens de Lyon.	I’m from Lyon.
	C’est dans le sac.	It’s in the bag.

💡 Astuce : à Paris · en France · au Japon · aux États-Unis.

2. A2 — Position words for describing any scene — plus the very French « chez ».

Structure	Exemple	Traduction
chez + personne	Le chat est sous la table.	The cat is under the table.
	Je suis chez moi.	I’m at home / at my place.
	La banque est à côté de la poste.	The bank is next to the post office.

💡 Astuce : « chez le boulanger », « chez moi » — pas de traduction directe !

3. B1 — Which verbs demand « à », which demand « de » — the B1 memory game.

💡 Astuce : Les modals (vouloir, pouvoir, devoir) = infinitif direct.

4. B2 — The traps: en/dans for time, par/pour, and depuis vs pendant.

en = durée + dans = délai	Je finis dans dix minutes.	I’ll finish in ten minutes.
	Je l’ai fait en dix minutes.	I did it in ten minutes.
	J’habite ici depuis 2020.	I’ve lived here since 2020.

💡 Astuce : « en 2 h » (ça a pris) ≠ « dans 2 h » (à partir de maintenant).

5. C1 — The compound prepositions that make written French precise.

afin de + en dépit de + quant à	Afin de réussir, il travaille dur.	In order to succeed, he works hard.
	En dépit de la pluie, on est sortis.	Despite the rain, we went out.
	Quant à moi, je reste.	As for me, I’m staying.

💡 Astuce : Les locutions = le vocabulaire de l’écrit soigné.

6. C2 — The rarest prepositions and the fixed literary turns worth recognising.

nonobstant + hormis + ès	Nonobstant les difficultés, il persévère.	Notwithstanding the difficulties, he perseveres.
	Tous étaient là, hormis Paul.	Everyone was there except Paul.
	Moyennant finances, c’est possible.	For a fee, it’s possible.

💡 Astuce : Le registre le plus rare — à reconnaître dans la presse et le droit.

7. Native — How prepositions get dropped, swapped and squashed at native speed.

chez → au + à → sur	Je vais au coiffeur.	I’m going to the hairdresser’s.
	Il habite sur Paris.	He lives in Paris (spoken).

💡 Astuce : L’oral simplifie tout — mais « chez » reste correct !
