La Voix Passive
être + participe passé — and how French avoids it
1. La formation
| Actif | Passif |
|---|---|
| Le chef prépare le plat. | Le plat est préparé par le chef. |
| On a construit ce pont en 1900. | Ce pont a été construit en 1900. |
| On invitera Marie. | Marie sera invitée. (agreement !) |
2. Par ou de ?
| Préposition | Quand | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| par | action concrète | La maison a été vendue par l’agence. |
| de | sentiment / état / description | Elle est aimée de tous. · Le mur est couvert de photos. |
3. Comment les Français l’évitent
| Astuce | Exemple | = English passive |
|---|---|---|
| on | On m’a volé mon vélo. | My bike was stolen. |
| se (pronominal) | Le vin blanc se boit frais. | White wine is drunk chilled. |
| actif simple | Ça se voit ! | It can be seen / it shows! |
💡 Astuce anglophone
English loves the passive ; French prefers on : “I was told…” → on m’a dit….
The participle ALWAYS agrees with the subject : la lettre a été envoyée.
Only verbs with a direct object can go passive — téléphoner à can’t (❌ elle a été téléphonée).
