acquérir in real spoken French
On this page
Union rights, grabbed skills, squashed pronouns.
Spoken, and rare
Be honest: nobody in a café says « j’ai acquis une voiture ». Spoken French keeps the verb for skills — « ça, je l’ai acquis en bossant » — and keeps the plural noun « les acquis » for rights nobody will hand back: « touche pas aux acquis sociaux ! ». « Tu as » squashes to « t’as », and « ils » loses its l: « i’ vont ».
For everything else the street swaps in « choper » (familier, very common): « l’accent, tu l’chopes en traînant avec eux ». Its verlan « pécho » (familier, younger) has drifted towards pulling and stealing, so leave it alone. And « bosser » (familier) is simply to work — the spoken home of everything you acquire the hard way.
💡 Focus at this level: Native — les acquis (spoken, not slang), choper, j’l’ai acquis en bossant
