acquérir at C2 — literary & formal

Deeds, nationality and the force of judgments.
Law and paperwork
Formal French keeps « acquérir » where English would say buy or get. A bidder « se porte acquéreur d’un immeuble »; a foreigner « acquiert la nationalité française par naturalisation »; a company announces « l’acquisition » of a rival. The verb is irregular exactly where it hurts: « il acquiert », « nous acquérons », « ils acquièrent », past participle « acquis ».
The great legal phrase is « acquérir force de chose jugée »: once the appeal deadlines pass, a judgment acquires that force and can no longer be challenged. Notice the family around it — « conquérir », « requérir », « s’enquérir » — all from the old verb « quérir ». Knowing the family makes the conjugations stop feeling arbitrary.
