    Limits and elisions

    In speech, « atteindre » lives mostly in the perfect: « j’ai atteint mes limites », « t’as atteint », where « tu as » is squashed to « t’as ». Before a consonant, « il » loses its l — « i’ fait c’qu’i’ veut » — but before a vowel the l is kept and links, so « il a » is heard as « i-la ». And the « ne » never survives: « j’arrive pas à l’atteindre ».

For figures, the street reaches for « taper dans les… » (familier): « i’ tape dans les deux cents » on the motorway, « ça tape dans les quarante degrés » in August, « ça tape dans les cinquante balles » for a restaurant bill, where « balles » means euros. It gives an approximate figure, not the moment a level is reached — that stays « atteindre ».

💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — t’as atteint, i’ fait c’qu’i’ veut, taper dans les…

👨‍🏫 How to use « atteindre » at this level

    1. « T’as atteint » = tu as atteint. The u of tu disappears before a vowel.

    2. « I’ fait c’qu’i’ veut » = il fait ce qu’il veut. The l goes before a consonant only.

    3. « Taper dans les… » = familier, up around a figure: vitesses, degrés, euros. An approximation, not « atteindre ».

    ✍️ Practice

Make it street: « Tu as atteint ton objectif ? »

    Show answer

« T’as atteint ton objectif ? » Tu as collapses to t’as before any vowel.

    Why « il a atteint » but « i’ fait » ?

    Show answer

Before a vowel the l is kept and links, so « il a » sounds like « i-la »; before a consonant it drops.
