atteindre at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Attaining perfection, infringing rights.
Law and letters
Add a preposition and the register jumps: « atteindre à » plus an abstract noun means to attain, in the literary sense — « son œuvre atteint à l’universel », « atteindre à la perfection ». Without the preposition, « atteindre la perfection » is the plain, neutral form. « Atteindre à » is rare, deliberate, and always about a quality rather than a target: use it once in an essay, not three times in a paragraph.
The legal workhorse is the noun: « porter atteinte à », to infringe or undermine. « Ces propos portent atteinte à la vie privée », « une atteinte à la dignité ». Reports and forecasts prefer the passive, « le seuil sera atteint en juin », and « hors d’atteinte » means beyond reach, of a fugitive or of a price.
💡 Focus at this level: Formal — atteindre à la perfection, porter atteinte à, hors d’atteinte
