comprendre in real spoken French
On this page
Getting it, or not getting it.
Spoken shortcuts
« Je ne comprends pas » is never said whole. The « ne » goes and « je » sticks to the verb: « j’comprends pas ». The object thins too, « c’que tu dis » for « ce que tu dis », and « je lui » becomes « j’lui ». Then watch a bare « compris ? » from a parent or a boss: that one is an order, not a question, and it expects no answer.
« Percuter » is the familier verb for the penny dropping: « il a pas percuté tout de suite », « j’ai mis trois plombes à percuter », where « trois plombes » simply means ages. « Que dalle », familier for nothing at all, attaches to the verb itself: « j’y comprends que dalle ». Older speakers keep « entraver », but only in the negative.
💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — j’comprends pas, percuter, compris ?
