Real spoken shortcuts
On the street essayer loses its polish. « Tu as essayé ? » becomes « T’as essayé ? », the ne disappears — « ça marche pas », « ça veut pas » — and subject pronouns squash, so « je laisse tomber » comes out « j’laisse tomber ». Both « j’essaie » and « j’essaye » are correct; « j’essaye » sounds more familiar, « j’essaie » is the safer written choice.
Two synonyms genuinely replace the verb. « Tenter » is familiar and everywhere: « vas-y, tente le coup », give it a shot. « Tester » is colloquial but respectable, used for food, apps, anything: « faut tester avant ». Keep essayer itself for anything written to a teacher or a boss, where the familiar pair would jar.
