From essayer to essai
In formal French the verb steps back and the noun steps forward. A protocol « a été essayé sur trois sites » in a report, with no named agent, because the passive is the default. A ministry, meanwhile, floats « un ballon d’essai », an idea leaked to the press purely to measure the reaction, and quietly dropped if that reaction is bad.
« Un coup d’essai » is a first attempt, and the proverb « Pour un coup d’essai, ce fut un coup de maître » grew out of Corneille, whose Cid says « pour leurs coups d’essai veulent des coups de maître ». Administration prefers « à titre d’essai », provisionally, for a limited period. The noun also names a genre, since Montaigne called his book « Essais ».
