naître in real spoken French
On this page
Squashed pronouns, born into it, born tired.
Born, spoken fast
Spoken French squeezes « je suis » into one sound, written « chuis » or « j’suis », so you hear « chuis né en 98 ». The « ne » of the negation goes too — « j’étais pas né » — and « moi » is often tacked on at the end for emphasis. Written down it looks wrong; out loud it is completely ordinary.
Three expressions to catch. « Être né dedans » means you grew up inside a trade and never had to learn it: « la mécanique, j’suis né dedans ». « Être né fatigué » is a friendly jab at someone bone idle. And to whoever leaves the door wide open, French says « t’es né dans une écurie ? », were you born in a barn.
💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — être né dedans, être né fatigué, né dans une écurie
