se rendre in real spoken French
On this page
Can you believe it, and turning up.
Real spoken shortcuts
« Tu te rends compte ?! » is not a question — it is the fixed exclamation of outrage, and nobody expects an answer. In speech it comes out « tu t’rends compte ?! », sometimes just « t’rends compte ?! ». Keep it exclamatory: the plain statement « je me rends compte que… » is a different, calmer animal. Giving in to a friend is « bon, j’me rends, t’as gagné ».
Two familier stand-ins. « Réaliser » has taken over from « se rendre compte » in speech: « j’ai réalisé trop tard ». Purists still object; everyone under sixty says it. « Se pointer » replaces « se rendre » only in the sense of turning up somewhere — « il s’est pointé à minuit », unannounced. It never covers official travel: « le ministre se rendra à Bruxelles » stays as it is.
💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — tu t’rends compte, réaliser, se pointer
