se taire in real spoken French
On this page
Rising rudeness, from chut to ta gueule.
Real spoken shortcuts
The imperative barely changes, but everything round it does. « Tu te tais » comes out « tu t’tais », and the « ne » is gone: « il se tait jamais ». « Tu écoutes » follows the same squeeze into « t’écoutes ». Between friends nobody reaches for « tais-toi » unless they are annoyed — a « chut » or a look does the work.
The synonyms rise in rudeness. « La fermer » is familier and everyday: « il sait pas la fermer ». « Ta gueule » is vulgar and constant on the street — never to someone you respect, never at work. « Boucle-la » still turns up and dates the speaker. « Ne pas moufter » is different: familier but frozen, met mostly in print and in « sans moufter », « il n’a pas moufté ».
💡 Focus at this level: Native slang — tu t’tais, la fermer (familier), ta gueule (vulgaire)
