🔑 Key forms
🔊 Common expressions
🇬🇧 Conduire in plain English: driving the whole -uire family
Conduire — to drive, to lead — heads the -uire family, one of French’s tidiest irregular clans: je conduis, tu conduis, il conduit, nous conduisons, vous conduisez, ils conduisent — the s-stem plural that also builds the imparfait (je conduisais) and subjonctif (que je conduise). Futur je conduirai; participle conduit — j’ai conduit. Now collect the family, because every member conjugates identically: traduire (translate — the learner’s own verb: j’ai traduit), construire (build), produire (produce), réduire (reduce), séduire (charm), détruire (destroy), cuire (cook — le poulet cuit). Eight verbs, one table — the -uire dividend.
Road French runs through this chart: le permis de conduire (the driving licence — a French rite of passage and a famously long story), « c’est moi qui conduis » (I’m driving — the designated-driver sentence), « elle conduit bien/mal » (the eternal passenger review). The leading sense survives in style: « conduire un projet » (lead a project), and the reflexive se conduire = to behave — « il s’est mal conduit » (he behaved badly), conduct in both English senses, which is no coincidence: English borrowed the word from exactly here. Drill with your commute: je conduis / je ne conduis pas, j’ai conduit deux heures, je traduis en conduisant (don’t) — and the family’s eight verbs ride along free.
