Écrire — to write — hides a v in its plural: j’écris, tu écris, il écrit, then nous écrivons, vous écrivez, ils écrivent. That écriv- stem (from Latin scribere — English «scribe» is a cousin) powers the imparfait (j’écrivais) and subjonctif (que j’écrive); the futur stays on the infinitive (j’écrirai), and the passé composé is j’ai écrit — participle écrit, which doubles as the noun: un écrit, a piece of writing. The family conjugates in lockstep: décrire (describe), inscrire and the everyday reflexive s’inscrire (register — je me suis inscrit au cours, the form-filling verb of French life), récrire, prescrire.

The drill that works: three sentences a night, in the passé composé, about the day — j’ai écrit becomes literal within a week. And one register note: écrire à quelqu’un (write TO someone) keeps its à — « je t’écris » (I’m writing to you) is complete, intimate, and the opening of half the letters in French literature.
