avoir at B2 — the subjunctive

« avoir » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

« avoir » in the subjunctive — wish, doubt, necessity, emotion.

The subjunctive

At B2, « avoir » takes the subjunctive — and here is the reframe that makes it click: the subjunctive is not a tense, it’s a mood. French uses it whenever the action lives in someone’s head rather than in reality: wishes (« je veux que »), necessity (« il faut que »), doubt (« je ne pense pas que »), emotion (« je suis content que »).

So don’t ask when — ask after what. The triggers are a short, learnable list, and the formation below starts from a form you already know. Weld trigger + verb together (« il faut que je… ») and practise them as single chunks: that’s how natives store them too.

👨‍🏫 How the subjunctive works — step by step

1

This verb’s subjunctive stem is irregular: ai- — learn « que je aie » as a fixed unit, like a phone number.

2

Add the endings:

-e-es-e-ions-iez-entnous/vous look like the imparfait
3

Now weld it to its triggers — the subjunctive never lives alone: il faut que je aie, bien que…, pour que…, je ne pense pas que

⚠️ Classic mistake: no subjunctive after j’espère que or affirmative je pense que — those take the indicative. The doubt/wish/necessity is what triggers it.

🧠 Memory hook: drill one trigger per day: today, say five true sentences starting « Il faut que je … » — your mouth learns the mood faster than your eyes.
