Se porter describes how someone is doing, in health terms: « il se porte bien » — he’s doing well. It is slightly more formal than aller and appears constantly in writing about people.
The idiom se porter comme un charme means to be in perfect health. And se porter volontaire means to volunteer, which is the sense you will meet at work.
