tomber at B2 — the subjunctive

« tomber » — jump to your level:A1A2B1B2C1C2Native

Falling in love, and other states you fall into.

Tomber amoureux

Tomber amoureux de — to fall in love with — takes de, and the adjective agrees: « elle est tombée amoureuse de lui ». The image is the same as in English, which makes it easy to remember and easy to get slightly wrong on agreement.

The pattern tomber + adjective or noun covers a whole family of sudden states: tomber malade, tomber enceinte, tomber d’accord. French treats all of them as falling into a condition.
