acheter at C1 — refined & idiomatic
On this page
Blind buys, bargains and mending your ways.
Buying, figuratively
« Acheter les yeux fermés » is the compliment you pay a brand or a person you trust: no checking, no haggling — « chez lui, j’achète les yeux fermés ». At the other end, « acheter pour une bouchée de pain » is the bargain story everyone tells: a mouthful of bread, meaning almost nothing, usually with a hint of luck.
« Acheter à prix d’or » is its mirror: paying a fortune, and the speaker usually thinks it was too much. Then the odd one, « s’acheter une conduite », which means to settle down, to start behaving — said of a wild friend who suddenly marries and buys a lawnmower. Keep the reflexive: without it the phrase falls apart. Slightly ironic, always affectionate.
