envoyer at C2 — literary & formal

Referrals, adjournments and political signals.
Envoyer in official French
« Renvoyer » is the formal workhorse, and the setting decides the sense. In an essay it means to refer: « ce passage renvoie à la note deux ». In court, « prononcer le renvoi de l’affaire » is to adjourn the hearing to a later date — but « le renvoi devant le tribunal correctionnel » is the opposite move, committal for trial, so read the complement before you read the sense. In an office, « renvoyer un salarié » is to dismiss him.
Administrative French prefers the noun. « Nous accusons réception de votre envoi » opens a standard reply, and « les frais d’envoi » appear on every invoice. Journalism keeps the verb but abstracts it: « envoyer un signal fort aux marchés », « envoyer un message clair ». Nothing physical travels; the phrase now fills political reporting.
