fuir at C2 — literary & formal
On this page
Leaks, brain drain and evasive witnesses.
The written register
In formal French the noun « fuite » outweighs the verb. « La fuite des cerveaux » is the brain drain, « la fuite des capitaux » is money leaving the country: two economists’ compounds built on the same image of something escaping. In journalism « une fuite » is a leak, a document reaching the press before its official release.
« La fuite en avant » deserves care. It names the escape that consists of pushing harder in the same wrong direction: more spending, more repression, more promises. Editorials use it as a verdict, never as praise. The adjective « fuyant » gives evasiveness, but only with the right nouns: « un air fuyant », « une attitude fuyante ». Answers, themselves, are « évasives ».
💡 Focus at this level: Formal — la fuite des cerveaux, une fuite, la fuite en avant
